Diane Scherer’s Entanglements

Diane Scherer makes art in collaboration with nature. Her fabrics are made from the patterns that plant roots make as they grow through a soil medium. These grass based fabrics are mysterious and to an eye used to seeing neatly woven warp and weft seem strangely unworldly and unnatural when they are anything but. In this work she draws attention to the intelligent action of plants and roots, however it does pose a dilemma as the finished work relies on the destruction of her living partner in art, the grass.
